Join the Strand Book Store’s team as we serve Greenwich Village as a community bookstore with over 2.5 million used, new, and rare books housed within our four floors, a wide array of bookish gifts and goods, and fun literary events held almost every night of the week. We’re looking for exceptional book lovers with great customer-service skills, a desire to work with Strand’s visitors and guests, and and a preference for working amongst 18 miles of books.

General Applications

Strand Book Store is always accepting applications for employment. Prospective employees must be at least 18 years of age and able to work full-time. General applications for staff positions must be submitted in person cannot be sent electronically.

Applications are available in our store offices on the third floor of our main location (828 Broadway, corner of 12 Street). Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:15 AM to 5 PM.

Entry-level positions are available on a regular basis; previous book selling experience or a literary background is preferred.



Design Project Manager

Iconic Manhattan retail institution Strand Bookstore is seeking qualified candidates for Design Production Project Management. This key management position is an integral part of Strand’s branding, creative and merchandising efforts. Candidates should be comfortable managing multiple projects from various departments while coordinating external resources and vendors for the timely completion of projects.

Strand’s Design Project Manager works with our team of creative designers, marketing and merchandising teams. As such, the role requires strong communication skills and an understanding of the ever-changing book and publishing industries. The Project Manager is responsible for the continued growth and maintenance of our creative brand.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee creative team of three designers by providing art direction and design feedback.
  • Direct the work of Artists and Designers in the creation, planning, development, and production of designs
  • Collaborate with internal marketing team to leverage Strand Bookstore campaigns, social media campaigns and social integration, including giveaways, in-store events, partnerships, and digital marketing campaigns to maximize marketing opportunities for the retail store
  • Managing multiple design projects at once and ensuring that each project meets business requirements, stays under budget and on time.
  • Creative direction and project management of branded elements, including in-store signage, window displays, marketing materials for both print and web, product design, packaging design, and internal store documents
  • Negotiate and manage vendor relationships.
  • Prior experience working with fashion brands such as Rag & Bone or Kate Spade are a plus.
  • Must have a solid understanding of Strand’s brand and of the competitive marketplace.

  • 3-5 years of work experience in a project management capacity is strongly preferred

Events Coordinator

Location: 826 Broadway, 3rd Floor
Hours: Primarily a closing shift, 12pm-9pm or 1pm-10pm. Flexible to work weekends and/or mornings when needed

Iconic Manhattan retail institution Strand Bookstore is seeking qualified candidates to join our Events and Programs team. This position is an integral part of Strand’s high profile and in-demand events program. The Events Coordinator is expected to supplement the events team primarily by assisting to run events and offsite events; s/he must be confident interacting with talent, publicists, and customers. S/he should be able to juggle multiple tasks at once, thinking about the immediate situation as well as events happening months in the future simultaneously.

Strand’s Event Coordinator works on a small but mighty team and will regularly interact with book buyers, communications & marketing, design, as well as the staff working as dedicated booksellers throughout the store. As such, this particular role requires the new Events Coordinator to also contribute by copywriting for the website and in-store promotions, creating and sending press invites/event blasts, as well as composing event introductions and event announcements. The ideal candidate is highly organized, very detail-oriented, and comfortable representing Strand online and in-person. This individual will be focused on ways to improve the department as well as grow it.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Execute pre- and post-show processes.
  • Assist and/or manage 3-4 events per week (onsite or offsite).
  • Liaise with publicists throughout the event-development process: sending and receiving pitches, confirming date/timing/participants, securing creative assets/guest lists/presentations when applicable, and regularly monitor marketing efforts on author’s side to ensure accuracy and representation, etc.
  • Serve as point person for book store staff: distribute Run of Show for large events, draft and provide FAQs for large events, and more.
  • Copywriting for a variety of events-related materials: calendars, fliers, press releases, press invites/event blasts.
  • Composing and distributing author/event introductions in-store announcements.
  • Draft proposals for events and emails to customers about large format events.
  • Liaise with publicists throughout the event-development process: sending and receiving pitches, confirming date/timing/participants, securing creative assets/guest lists/presentations when applicable, and regularly monitor marketing efforts on author’s side to ensure accuracy and representation, etc.
  • Serve as point person for book store staff: distribute Run of Show for large events, draft and provide FAQs for large events, and more.

Successful candidates will:

  • Remain calm and collected under pressure.
  • Handle customer service issues with speed and grace.
  • Have strong written/copy editing and oral communications skills—this is essential.
  • Be comfortable with Google Apps and be up for learning new systems (Basil, custom CMS).
  • Feel at ease training staff on all facets of events (tech, check in, reg, offsites, line management).
  • Plans to grow content event-specific content opportunities (think sneak peeks, interviews with authors, etc); be an “ideas person.”
  • Video/photography skills are a plus.
