Main Floor Manager

"Alex has long been an enthusiast of comics, children's picture book illustration, and the art of storytelling. After moving to New England to study illustration at Rhode Island School of Design, she enjoyed facilitating children's programs at ¡CityArts! and working closely with other women artists through her membership of the Providence-based Dirt Palace Arts Collaborative. Alex spent much of her time puppet building, screen printing and drinking coffee until she made her decision to move to New York."

"In 2010, she received a Master of Library Science at CUNY Queens College with a certificate in Youth Services. A fervent love of children's literature and the winding road of fate led her to her current position managing the Strand Children’s Department. She now lives in Queens where she continues to make prints, play pinball, and bake a mean squash-pie."

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom By Bill Martin, Lois Ehlert John Archambault

Chicka Chicla Boom Boom

by Bill Martin

"Chicka chicka boom BOOM! This is a great book to read aloud to preschool aged children. Martin and Archambault give the letters of the alphabet a playful (and slightly mischievous) personality. Ehlert's colorful illustrations are simple but engaging. The song-like rhythm and rhyming gives the story a nice cadence. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom also lends itself well to repeat readings without driving adults crazy. Highly recommended!"

The High King (The Chronicles of Prydain: Book Five) By Lloyd Alexander

The High King (The Chronicles of Prydain: Book Five)

by Lloyd Alexander

"** spoiler alert ** In so many fantasy novels, the protagonists complete their journey with unrivaled supernatural skills and/or enchanted items. As Alexander's characters grow from youth and romantic naivete to a place of maturity and capability, they actually lose their magical powers and objects. The ending to The High King, and to this series, was bittersweet; The Princess Eilonwy never became a powerful enchantress, Fflewddur's magical harp was destroyed, even Hen Wen the pig lost her oracular powers. In order to be heroic, each character sacrificed some kind of fantastical skill or gift. This didn't make them more glorious; it did make them better characters. The Chronicles of Prydain has become one of my all-time favorite fantasies. So highly recommended!"
