More about the book
Katherine and Michael--both high school seniors--meet, start dating, fall in love, and begin a sexual relationship. They promise to love each other forever, but they soon find that forever is a very long time when you're only 18. Although other books had dealt with teenagers embarking on sexual relationships, FOREVER was one of the first books in which teenage sexual activity did not result in such "punishments" as unplanned pregnancy, a dangerous illegal abortion, or death. First published in 1975, FOREVER broke new ground by having Katherine visit Planned Parenthood and go on the pill--an action which clearly reflected the decision of many women of that time period. In later editions of the book, author Judy Blume provided a forward explaining that if she were writing FOREVER today, any discussion of birth control would also address HIV, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases. Written for young adults, FOREVER includes several sexual situations and also makes it clear that Katherine enjoys sex, which at that time was a unique presentation of a female character.
