Product Description

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. If sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. 374p. (Ages: YA).

"Wow! This adventure is breathtaking. The enemy terrible. Once you begin reading about protagonist Katniss Everdeen you won't want to stop. She is unintentionally likable, strong and smart. You will find yourself cheering and screaming at the pages when the bow and arrow are in her very capable hands. Get the two sequels! " -- Miguel S., Books By the Foot Associate

Don't be fooled by the font size

Despite my initial response, somewhere along the lines of "this book's font is too big for my level of reading", I dusted my literary hubris and continued to read past Katniss's hunting ventures, the reaping calls, the preparation and the thrill of the hunger games. Like a base on acid, the subtle romance between Katniss and Gale then Katniss and Peeta and the desperate loyalty even among "enemies" makes the Hunger Games peculiar. Romance in a fight to the death? Trust me though - I wasn't able to put the book down and ended up reading it in one sitting!

    Must Read!

Great read for young teens through adults. It is an enjoyable edge of your seat page turner but also offers some deeper meaning if the reader is looking for it. It is set in a similar dystopian landscape as Brave New World and explores some of the same themes that Lord of the Rings does. This first book (of the trilogy) can stand alone as a great novel but I highly recommend the other two as well!
