David Lida + Daniel Alarcón
Thursday November 3: 7:00PM – 8:00PM
David Lida is the author of four books, including First Stop in the New World, a critically-acclaimed street-level panorama of contemporary Mexico City; Travel Advisory, a collection of short stories; and Las llaves de la ciudad, which he wrote in Spanish, his second language. When he's not writing, he is a mitigation specialist, conducting investigations for lawyers who defend Mexicans who are in jail in the US, facing charges of capital murder and, as such, the death penalty. Using this work as an inspiration, Lida's first novel, One Life, follows Richard, its protagonist, along the back roads of Mexico, as he tries to save the life of Esperanza, in jail in Louisiana, accused of murdering her 11-month-old baby.
David will be joined in conversation by Daniel Alarcón. Daniel is the author of At Night We Walk in Circles, which was a finalist for the 2014 PEN-Faulkner Award, as well as the story collection War by Candlelight and the novel Lost City Radio. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Granta, n+1, and Harpers, and in 2010, he was named one of the New Yorker‘s “20 under 40.” He is Executive Producer of Radio Ambulante, and teaches at the Columbia University School of Journalism in New York.
