As Columbia Records’ official photographer, Don Hunstein was the man behind some of the most enduring images of 20th century music. He photographed Bob Dylan for the cover of his Freewheelin album and for the “Like A Rolling Stone” sessions, Johnny Cash for his classic albums of the 1960s, and such notable performers as Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, and Simon & Garfunkel, among others. Hunstein’s work brilliantly captures both the public and privates sides of these musicians, providing a nuanced images of instantly recognizable artists. Keeping Time: The Photographs of Don Hunstein brings together this remarkable cache of work, including numerous previously unpublished photographs. Edited by veteran record producer and Grammy nominee Leo Sacks, with text by Jon Pareles, the chief pop music critic for the New York Times and former music editor at Rolling Stone and the Village Voice, Keeping Time is gorgeously produced look at the work of an important photographer and the last five decades of music.
Jon Pareles and Leo Sacks will speak about Hunstein’s work and the musicians he documented through his photographs. They’ll be joined for the evening by DeeAnne Hunstein, Don Hunstein’s wife, who was present for many of Don’s legendary photoshoots.
