Vulture Insiders Book Club: The Idiot by Elif Batuman

Tuesday April 18: 7:30PM 8:30PM

The Vulture Insiders Book Club returns for another discussion! Join writer and journalist Boris Kachka as he sits down with Elif Batuman to discuss her new book, The Idiot, a novel about self-discovery and creating one's own identity.

At the dawn of the email, college freshman Selin starts her schooling by trying all sorts of new things. She studies topics previously unknown, befriends students from various far-flung countries, and meets Ivan, a man with whom she starts exchanging emails. Through these connections Selin travels to new places and explores her new life as she hangs on the edge of adulthood.

Elif Batuman is an author, academic, and journalist. She graduated from Harvard College, and received her doctorate in comparative literature from Stanford University. Her dissertation, The Windmill and the Giant: Double-Entry Bookkeeping in the Novel, is about the process of social research and solitary construction undertaken by novelists. Her first book, The Possessed: Adventures with Russian Books and the People Who Read Them, was based on material she previously published in The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, and n+1.
