My Account


How do I use my gift card online?

Enter the gift card number in the space provided. No spaces or punctuation is necessary. Please note that only one gift card can be used per order for payment.

Also include a valid credit card for identification (this is required). If the purchase exceeds the gift card balance, the credit card will be charged the difference unless you indicate another form of payment.

What if my gift card does not cover the cost of my order?

You may split payment with a gift card and any other method of payment.

Can I pay online and pick up my books?

If you select a credit card as your payment method and "This Is An In-Store Pickup" in the delivery screen, we will charge your credit card when your order is complete. You will receive an email notification when your order is ready. Please do not attempt to pick-up your order prior to receiving email notification. All paid store pick-up orders will be held for seven (7) days at our main floor registers and can be picked up by providing your name. Please allow 1-2 business days for processing time. Orders not picked up within seven days will automatically be refunded. Additionally, please note that while we do our best to process all orders as soon as possible, our online inventory is the same as our in-store inventory and therefore may be subject to prior sale.

Can I reserve the books and pay at the store?

If you select "Pay In-Store" in the payment options screen and "This Is An In-Store Pickup" in the delivery screen, we will hold the books and you may choose the method of payment when you arrive at the store. You will receive an email notification when your order is ready for pick-up. Please do not attempt to pick up your order prior to receiving email notification. All unpaid pick-up orders will be held for three (3) days at the basement information desk and can be picked up by providing your name. Orders not picked up within three days will be cancelled and the items returned to stock for general sale. Please allow 1-2 business days for processing time. Additionally, please note that while we do our best to process all orders as soon as possible, our online inventory is the same as our in-store inventory and therefore may be subject to prior sale.

Please note that warehouse items require payment at the time of checkout; therefore, "Pay In-Store" is not an option. Also, please be aware that orders containing warehouse items can take an additional 2-3 business days (in an addition to the stated 1-2 business days) for processing time.

How do I save this billing address for future use?

We can save a number of billing addresses in your account to save you time. If you do not want this information saved, you can go to your account and delete the address after checkout. You can manage your billing and shipping addresses in your account.

Was my order successfully placed?

You will receive on screen confirmation that your order has been placed successfully as well as an automated email confirmation including your order number and details. This is not a confirmation of availability; this confirms only that your order was successfully placed online. Please note that you are not charged at the time you receive your order confirmation. Orders are processed once the item(s) is in hand and ready to be processed and shipped. You will receive a shipment confirmation email when your order has been processed and shipped.

What happens when I order a book that is currently out of stock?

The book will be placed on your Requested Item List for 60 days. You will be contacted via email if we receive a copy during this time. No books will be charged or shipped without your express permission.

What is the Requested Item List?

When an item is unavailable at the time you place your order, a standing order is placed for that item for 60 days. If we receive a copy during this time, you will be notified and you may choose to purchase the book. No Requested Item listed items will be charged to you without your express permission. If we do not receive a copy within this period, the order will be canceled. You may choose to re-order the book if you would like to renew its Requested Item listed status for another 60 days. Additionally, please note that while we do our best to process all orders as soon as possible, our online inventory is the same as our in-store inventory and therefore may be subject to prior sale.

When will my books come "back in stock?"

Although we provide no guarantee that out of stock items will come back in stock, our stock is continually replenished as we buy books every day.

Why can I order more books than are available?

Our stock is constantly replenished as we buy books from customers and publishers every day. Your order request may exceed our stock quantity as we may receive more of your item in the future. The out of stock quantity will be placed on a standing order for 60 days and you will be notified if and when your book becomes available. No back in stock items will be charged to you without your express permission.

Warehouse Items

How can I tell if the item I’m viewing is a Warehouse item?

“Ships Directly From Warehouse” will be displayed as the item’s location.

What does "Ships Directly From Warehouse" mean?

The “Ships Directly From Warehouse” designation means that the item is stocked and shipped directly from our off-site warehouse.

Are Warehouse items available in the store?

No, these items are only located at our off-site warehouse. You will not find these items on our store shelves.

Is it possible to order Warehouse items for store pick-up?

Absolutely! You can place your order through our website using the normal checkout process. Please be sure to select the “store pick-up” option during checkout. Also, please be aware that it may take an additional 2-3 business days to receive and process your order in addition to the stated 1-2 business day processing time for all orders that contain warehouse items.

Why can’t I choose the “pay in-store” payment option for Warehouse order?

Before taking the time and effort to pack, ship, and receive these items, we just want to be sure that you’re sure this is an item you want to purchase. That’s all!

If I purchase both Warehouse items and items available in your store, will they be shipped together?

No. Warehouse items will be grouped (whenever possible) and shipped directly from our warehouse. Items available in our store will be grouped and shipped directly from us. For this reason, you may receive your packages at different times. Please note that there is a 1-2 business day processing time for all online orders. Tracking information in either case will be provided once your item(s) has shipped.

Will I be charged additional shipping costs for Warehouse orders shipped from your warehouse?

No! We want to make your Strand shopping experience as pleasant as possible. Warehouse items are charged the same shipping rates had the items been available in our store.

But what if I order both Warehouse items and items available in your store in the same order?

That still doesn’t make a difference! We will only charge you the first item cost plus additional shipping costs had all items been available in our store.

Why has my Warehouse item been cancelled?

Although warehouse items are usually in stock and our warehouse has a high fulfillment rate, occasionally an item will be out of stock. In these rare cases, we do not expect the item to come back into stock; so the warehouse item will be cancelled from your order and you will not be charged for the item.

Why was my Warehouse item cancelled and not “requested” like other out-of-stock items?

As mentioned above, very rarely will a warehouse item be out of stock. However, if the item is unavailable, we do not expect it to come back into stock. For that reason, we will automatically cancel your warehouse item and you will not be charged for it. Only items ordered directly from the store and found to be out-of-stock will be “requested” because of the high volume of new items received daily.

What is your return policy for Warehouse items?

The return policy for all online orders is the same, whether those items were shipped directly from us or from our warehouse. You can find our return policy at the bottom of your invoice. Please contact us directly if you have any additional questions about our return policy.

How can I pay with a Purchase Order?

The Strand Bookstore accepts purchase orders from qualifying institutions. To use a purchase order account, please select "Use A Strand Account" as your payment method and enter the PO number in the box provided.  Orders placed with this payment method are subject to approval.

How can I set up a business account?

How do I pay through PayPal?

You can click on the "Check out with PayPal" button from your shopping bag or from step 4 (Billing) during the checkout process. You will then be directed to the PayPal site to authorize payment for your order. Please note that you must still complete the checkout process at www.strandbooks.com to complete your order. Once completed, you will receive an email order confirmation.

What credit cards does the Strand accept?

The Strand Bookstore accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards. The billing address that you provide must match the address that appears on your credit card statements. Your card will not be charged until your order is complete and ready to be shipped.

When will I be charged?

We require 2-3 days processing time from the time you place your order before it can be invoiced and shipped. Your credit card or PayPal account will be charged after the order is complete, just prior to shipping. You will receive an automated shipping confirmation email once your order has shipped. Remember, delivery expectations take effect after your order has shipped, NOT from the time you place your order.

What is "Hold for Pick-up?"

You may choose to pick up your books at our store on 12th and Broadway, just south of Union Square. Please see the Ordering FAQ section above for more details about in-store pick-up orders. Additionally, please note that while we do our best to process all orders as soon as possible, our online inventory is the same as our in-store inventory and therefore may be subject to prior sale.

Please note that warehouse items require payment at the time of checkout; therefore, "Pay In-Store" is not an option.

What is a business day?

A business day is Monday through Friday. Please note that our offices and our Shipping department are closed Saturdays and Sundays.

When can I expect my order to be delivered?

United States Postal Service takes approximately 4-14 business days and UPS Ground takes approximately 2-6 business days for delivery from the time the order has shipped. UPS Second Day Air should arrive within two business days of the ship date. UPS Next Day Air will arrive the next business day.

Please note that we require 2-3 days processing time here at the store to secure your order. Delivery expectations take effect after your order has shipped, NOT from the time you place your order.

Does the subtotal displayed in the Shopping Cart include shipping and taxes?

No, shipping and taxes will be calculated and included after checkout when the items are secured and your order is processed.

How can I add more items to my cart?

You may continue shopping by entering a search item at the top right of the page or by clicking the "Strand Logo" in the upper left hand corner which will take you back to the Strandbooks.com homepage.

How can I change the quantity of an item in my shopping cart?

Adjust your cursor to the box marked "QTY" to the right of the item's title and change the quantity as desired.

How can I save an item for future purchase?

To save an item for purchase at a later date, you may click on the "Add to Wish List" button to the right of the item in question. The item will be removed from your current shopping bag and you will be dircted back to the product page where you must create a wish list name before adding any products.  Create a name for your "Wish List" and click "Add to List Wish" button.   The product will be added to your wish list.   Your Wish List viewable towards the top or bottom of the Shopping Bag page by clicking the "My Wish List" link. When viewing your Wish List you may move items back to your current shopping bag by clicking "Manage" then "Add to your shopping bag".

How can I view an item's description after I have placed it in my cart?

To view the details of an item from the Shopping Bag page, click on the item's title or image.

How do I remove items from my cart?

To remove an item from your shopping bag, click on the "remove" button to the right of the item you wish to remove. The page will refresh automatically and your cart will be updated.

How long before items on my Want List are cancelled?

Books placed on your Requested Item List automatically expire after 60 days. You should receive a "Status Change" email notifying you that your order has expired. You may re-order the book if you would like it to remain on your Requested Item List for another 60 days.

How will I find out when my items come back in stock?

We will contact you via the email address provided in your account as soon as your book becomes available. If you are still interested, you may choose to purchase the book at this time. No books will be charged to you without your express permission.

Can the pricing of a book change from when it went out of stock to back in stock

Yes, prices are based on the condition of the book or current value in the marketplace. Therefore, you will see the final price in your wishlist before you decide to move the item to your cart for purchase. As noted on our web site, prices are subject to change.

Is the book reserved for me once I place it in my cart?

Placing an item in your shopping bag does not automatically reserve the item for you. Another customer may purchase the book before it is secured by our department. We do our best to process online orders as quickly as possible but, remember, all items are subject to prior sale. This also holds true for order confirmations.

Is there a time limit on how long a shopping cart can remain open and active?

If you log in while shopping, your shopping bag will be saved as part of your account and will not expire automatically. If you do not log in, your cart will last for 2 weeks from the same browser. This depends on cookies in your browser, so clearing your cookies will wipe out a shopping bag of this sort.

How can I check the status of my order?

You may check the status of your orders in your account online. Log in using your user name (email address) and password and you may view the status and contents of all pending orders. You may also change/add/delete shipping and billing addresses (not on pending orders).

What does "expired" mean in my account?

"Expired" refers to books that were previously on your Requested Item List but have outgrown their 60 day standing order status.

What is the Want List?

When an item is unavailable at the time you place your order, a standing order is placed for that item for 60 days. If we receive a copy during this time, you will be notified and you may choose to purchase the book. Please note that we will not charge your card or ship your order without your express permission.

If we do not receive a copy within this period, the order will be cancelled.

What's my username and/or password?

Your username is the email address that you used when you first created your account. Remember that passwords are case-sensitive. Bookstore is not the same as BOOKSTORE or BoOKstore.

If you cannot remember your password, we can send it to you. Simply click on the "Forgot your password?" link on the Account Login screen and enter the email address that you used to create the account. Your password will be emailed to that address.

Why does my order still say processing?

Strandbooks.com requires 2-3 days to completely process your order. If your order still says "processing" more than 3 days after it was placed, please contact us and we will work quickly to resolve any issues that may be delaying your order.
