A continuation of the story that began with the award-winning A Faraway Island finds Stephie preparing to begin school on the mainland and falling in love with older boy Sven, whose anti-Hitler sentiments and beliefs about equality prompt Stephie to consider what her parents are enduring back in Vienna.
