The photographer's famous scrapbook is published here for the first time. Imprisoned by the Germans in 1940, Cartier-Bresson escaped in 1943, only to discover that MoMA (NYC) had begun preparations for a posthumous exhibition, having presumed his death. Delighted to learn of the exhibit plans, the photographer traveled to NYC in 1946 with a suitcase of 300 prints, bought a scrapbook, & presented his album to MoMA. His exhibition opened in February 1947. After his death in 2004, the Cartier-Bresson Foundation restored the prints to make possible this memorial collection. 346 b&w photos.
