On October 6th the Strand was fortunate to have JR come to our second floor Art Department and create an installation. He put up 8 adjoining vertical stacks of 25 copies each of this title with spines facing out. Using the spines of these 200 copies as a 'canvas' he then painted an enormous eye(!). When the paint dried the books were gently separated from each other. The books are unsigned but each spine of each book represents a unique part of the painting JR kindly made for the Strand. The books are being sold for the list price of $60.00 each.

In this project, artist JR has chosen Shanghai as one of the most dynamic cities in the world. A city that is representative of the quick changes that occur in the modern world. The lives of Shanghai citizens are the reflection of all the changes that have occurred and all the issues society is consequently facing now. The Wrinkles of the City is a worldwide project that has also been brought to Spain and that will continue around the world going from Shanghai to Los Angeles. The book documents the French artist’s work in 2010 photographing Shanghai’s elderly inhabitants, plastering their portraits on the city streets and buildings, and finally, recounting their personal memories and views on society. Text in English and Chinese. Illus. Color / b&w photographs. 144p.

Guerilla street artist JR traveled to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, Kenya, Brazil, India, and Cambodia to seek out women struggling in their everyday lives and, in his words, “to take their stories around the world.” Pasting mural-size portraits of his subjects into their own communities—on the sides of buildings, on trains, on bridges—he brings a haunting human presence to harsh environments of social conflict. His photographs of the vast outdoor “exhibitions” that he creates are iconic images celebrating the worth of the individual. A beautifully illustrated account of this remarkable project, Women Are Heroes introduces JR’s thrilling imagery of the modern landscape filled with human faces, and also includes his original photographic portraits paired with interviews in which the women share their lives and dreams.
