First, Buz has tosurvive a hurricane in the Caribbean,a typhoon in the South Seas, and a stonecold killer with a deceptivelymild manner and the innocuous-soundingname of Harry Sparrow. As if that weren’t enough, Buz gets himselfcaught in a political hurricanewhen he gets trapped behind the IronCurtain just as the Cold War heats up. And if you think Buz and Christy’sAfricanhoneymoon is a picnic... think again. All of this is brought vividly andgorgeously to life through Roy Crane’s sure-footed writing and stunningstorytelling in the classic newspaper strip,a rollicking series of adventures filledwith knock-out women, brutal assassins, and extremely bad weather.

World War II has ended, and with so many pilots mustered out at the end of the war, jobs for pilots are hard to find, and Buz’s record as a “hot-shot” pilot does not recommend him to commercial airlines. While looking for a job, Buz visits his old alma mater and spends time with glamorous Tot Winter and girl-next-door Christy Jameson. He finally finds the perfect job as a troubleshooter for International Airways, flying to trouble spots all over the world. He encounters Sultry, the beautiful and dangerous woman he met on a Japanese-held island during the war, with fatal results for a major character in the strip. He travels to the arctic to stop the Mad Baron, an insane ex-Nazi trying to shoot down International Airways planes. And, in the only adventure to combine the daily and Sunday story lines, he teams up with his old pal Roscoe Sweeney to discover a fabulous ancient Mayan treasure. This book reprints the Sunday pages from this adventure in full color for the first time. In the last adventure in our second volume, Buz is kidnapped and flown to Africa by mysterious assailants. His friend Chili Harrison bets International Airways chief Mr. Wright $200 that even in this desperate situation, Buz will manage to get involved with a pretty girl. Long-time readers of the strip will have no trouble guessing who wins that bet. Comic strip historian Brian Walker wrote, “Buz Sawyer combined fast-paced adventure stories…with authentically illustrated military equipment and real locations, which Crane researched during trips around the world.” Roy Crane’s drawing and storytelling skills just get better and better. With this volume’s Buz reprints from 1945 to 1947, Crane hit his stride.

In the fourth volume of Fantagraphics’ Captain Easy series, our eponymous hero and his loyal sidekick Wash Tubbs answer a newspaper ad that they don’t know is years out of date, and wind up stranded in Guatemala with a busted landing gear and only five dollars to their name. Whoops! They need all their wits and ingenuity to get them out of this fix. Which they manage to do by the skin of their teeth, only to stumble onto a lost city in the jungle. Lost cities in the jungle are never good news, and so it is with our two boisterous heroes. Against all odds, they extricate themselves from this dastardly peril and head for home on a ship carrying tigers (Roy Crane loved to draw tigers). They’re out of danger, right? Wrong! What kind of a Captain Easy adventure would this be without our boys getting stranded on a desert island and encountering the beautiful but savage Wolf Girl (Crane loved to draw Wolf Girls!)? Don’t miss the last volume of Fantagraphics’ glorious reprint of Roy Crane’s full color Captain Easy Sunday pages.

With Wash Tubbs, Roy Crane created the American adventure comic strip. But his greatest creation was the CAPTAIN EASY Sunday page. Commencing with this volume, Fantagraphics is reprinting the complete run of Roy Crane's CAPTAIN EASY in four volumes. In this first installment, Captain Easy visits a lost city, battles pirates, dons a diving suit in search of sunken treasure. And everywhere he goes, he finds beautiful women, or beautiful women find him. All of the pages in this book, with one exception, are from color scans of Sunday pages printed in newspapers. The one exception is the strip for October 6, 1935, where no color newspaper page could be found. That page has been hand colored in-house from a scan of a page in a newspaper that ran the strip in black and white. Color illus. 132p.

The third volume in Fantagraphics’ ongoing reprint of Roy Crane’s legendary comedy-action series features what many consider the absolute peak of the series: “Temple of the Swinks,” in which Wash and Easy discover an ancient temple with statues of an unknown animal called a swink... a real-life specimen of which shows up!In other stories, Wash and Easy sail for Singapore aboard a dhow with a cargo of wild animals, crash land a plane on an island inhabited by (inevitably) pirates and (just as inevitably) beautiful women, and sail the South Seas in a schooner whose villainous captain plans to rob them. When they return to America, Wash Tubbs’ pet swink draws huge crowds and a reputation for being worth a million dollars. Then Wash and Easy travel to Peru to rescue an American lost in the jungle and, in the cover-featured story, Easy goes deep sea diving in search of a beautiful girl’s lost diamond.
