Product Description

[Together with] 2 pp Autograph letter signed from Constance Markiewicz. 8vo. 164 mm x 130 mm. Manuscript, containing autographs, poems, and quotations by various and prominent Irish nationalists, and three full color ink drawings by Sean Milroy (Sean Mac Giolla n’ Riogh), two caricaturing Eamonn O’Dwyer, the owner of the book. Green padded cloth, stamped 'Album' in gilt. [82] pp, plus endpapers, with final leaf before rear endpaper excised, and some blank. Among others, contributors include Tomas MacCurtain, J.J. O’Connell, Joseph Stanley, M.J. Brennan, P.T. Daly, Liam Langley, John O’Reilly, Joseph Robinson, John J. Scollan, as well as a page of mounted autographs including Eoin MacNeill, Piaras Beaslai, Lawrence Ginnell, and Eamon De Valera. With 2 ALs to unknown recipient (addressed as “A’cara”), one from Padraic Pearse and the 2nd from Constance Markiewicz. The Pearse letter discusses lack of job prospects in Dublin and advises her to stay in Waterford where she “can be of as much use” as in Dublin, although Dublin may be “the heart of all things Irish… There is Irish work to be done everywhere, and perhaps better and more urgent work to be done in the place one has lived.” The Markiewicz letter discusses the difficulty of finding work for women, and advises A'cara “not to sign your name in Irish if you answer any letters re: jobs”. Pearse and Markiewicz letters are scarce, and these both contain great content. VG.
