The 1997 charity auction of 79 cocktail and evening dresses belonging to Princess Diana was held at Christie’s New York--the rumor was that Prince Charles didn’t want the dresses all over London--and lasted just two and a half hours. Christie’s officials speculated they might only raise $400,000, but the actual total came out to over $3.6 million. Breaking the previous Christie’s sales record for a garment, Princess Diana’s off-the shoulder, ink-blue velvet dress designed by Victor Edelstein sold for $222,500. This is the limited signed edition of the auction catalogue, bound in full leather and hand-numbered and signed by Diana, just a few weeks before her untimely death.
