Product Description

In 1918 Ernest Hemingway went to war. He volunteered for the ambulance service in Italy, was wounded and twice decorated. Out of this experience came A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Heminway’s description of war is unforgettable. He recreates the fear, the comradeship, the courage of his young American volunteer, and the men and women he meets in Italy, with total conviction. But this work is not only a novel of war – in it Hemingway has also created a love story of immense drama and uncompromising passion. 293p.

Love is the slowest form of suicide

Love kills slowly; Italy provides the backdrop for this unconventional love story that incorporates the Great War and the love of an army personnel and a nurse that he chance encounters in the countryside. The audience becomes privileged to watch the linear progression of a loving relationship between the two main characters develop and ultimately reach fruition. Hemmingway tackles the taboos of being unmarried, running away from the army and what being a patriot really means. He does not disguise his distaste for the war throughout the novel and he establishes the characters as relatable to the lay man. A good quick read, especially if you like the war time love novels but be forewarned that this love story does not end in the happy fairy tale way.
