Captives

A history of captivity narratives by Britons from different social & ethnic backgrounds from the early seventeenth century to the Victorian era. Here, for example, are the stories of: Sarah Shade, who married a succession of British military officers, was attacked by tigers, and endured imprisonment by Indian ruler Tipu Sultan; Joseph Pitts, a white slavein Algiers from 1678-1693 & author of the first English account of the pilgrimage to Mecca; and, Florentia Sale, a captive in the Kabul insurrections of 1841 who used her incarceration time to write her memoir.
