Strand Notes

Unique to his time, Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas (1834-1917) remained an outsider to the famous impressionist group that included, among others, Monet and Renoir. Though he never adopted the en-plein-air painting techniqueof his colleagues, nor did he minic their dissolved brushtrokes, this great figure of late 19th-century painting has always been associated with the impressionist movement. Degas sought his motifs in the urban scenery of burgeoning Paris where he found his subjects at the racetrack, in cafes, in parolor, the bedroomo, and, most significantly, the dance studio. Addenda. Color illus. 192p.
