This is the story behind a startup war.
It’s the tale of two improbable companies whose battle in 2015 unleashed $750 million worth of advertising as they sought to win an exploding fantasy sports and gambling market. In a time of gushing venture capital money, FanDuel and DraftKings turned into shiny billion-dollar unicorns seemingly overnight. Then, just as quickly, they found themselves at the center of a national scandal and the target of an FBI and Department of Justice investigation, facing likely destruction.
In Billion Dollar Fantasy, Sports Illustrated writer Albert Chen tells the saga of the entrepreneurs and gamblers who found themselves in a battle for supremacy that reached unimaginable heights: An Irishman who wasn’t a sports fan. A fantasy geek who felt it was his destiny to change the way fellow nerds watched the games they loved. A conflicted high-stakes poker player. A mother of three in Scotland. They went from everyday consultants and managers to stars in the tech world celebrated on magazine covers—then found themselves wondering if they were all going to jail.
In a high-octane narrative, Chen takes us from casinos to state houses to board rooms, from Edinburgh to Wall Street to the Vegas Strip, to tell a startlingly intimate tale while painting a picture of a new world that the group of accidental disruptors helped to create. It’s a tale of ideas and dreams, about a rapidly changing universe of risk, luck, hubris, greed, and redemption—a story for our frenetic, high-stakes times.
Join us as Albert Sits down with fellow Sports Illustrated writer Ben Reiter to discuss his "rollicking, riveting account" of the battle that shaped sports fandom!
