New York City has always stood as a symbol of opportunity and diversity among the international community. But in recent decades, the long reach of real estate moguls has jeopardized the livelihood of small businesses and neighborhoods. Newsstands are being forcibly closed, with owners powerless to do anything. Family owned restaurants and shops are being strong-armed by building owners with exorbitant rent hikes. Families who have lived on blocks for generations watch as their neighborhoods undergo a cultural metamorphosis due to gentrification. For a decade, the owner of the blog Jeremiah's Vanishing New York has taken it upon himself to chronicle the sad and gradual disappearance of the landmarks that represent the identity of the city. Propelled by Moss’ hard-hitting, cantankerous style, Vanishing New York is a staggering examination of contemporary "urban renewal" and its repercussions.

Join us in the Rare Book Room as Jeremiah Moss discusses the slow death of old New York City and his new book with Amy Rose Spiegel.
