Jessie Chaffee: Florence in Ecstasy

Jessie Chaffee's debut novel FLORENCE IN ECSTASY is EM Forster meets Elena Ferrante meets Jean Rhys. Hannah, a young American woman arrives in Florence knowing no one and speaking little Italian. But she is isolated in a more profound way, estranged from her own identity after a bout with starvation that has left her life and body in ruins. She is determined to recover in Florence, a city saturated with beauty, vitality, and food, as well as a dangerous history of sainthood for women who starved themselves for God. Join us in the Rare Book Room as Jessie Chaffee shares her debut novel, followed by a signing.

Jessie Chaffee was awarded a 2014-2015 Fulbright Grant in Creative Writing to Italy to complete the novel, during which time she was the Writer-in-Residence at Florence University of the Arts. She is now an editor at Words Without Borders, an online magazine of international literature.

Katie Freeman is Executive Publicist at Riverhead Books and is getting her M.A. in Arts Administration at Baruch College. She currently serves on committees for the National Book Foundation, PEN American Center, Narrative 4, Libraries Without Borders, and Community-Word Project, among others.
