In the 2nd floor Art Department the Strand is welcoming YA book lovers for a talk between Jenny Downham, Jennifer Donnelly and David Levithan. We will be celebrating the book tour and release of David Levithan's 19 Love Songs and the NYC launch of Jenny Downham's Furious Thing.
Furious Thing tells the story of Lexi, a remarkably affecting story that explores the myriad of ways a girl's sense of self can be whittled away, and what might happen when she fights back:
If only she could stop losing her temper and behave herself, her stepfather would accept her, her mom would love her like she used to, and her stepbrother would declare his crushing desire to spend the rest of his life with her. She wants these things so badly, she's determined to swallow her anger and make her family proud. But pushing fury down doesn't make it disappear. Instead, it simmers below the surface waiting to erupt . . . And there'll be fireworks when it does.
19 Love Songs is a return to some of the beloved characters from David Levithan and stories born from Levithan's tradition of writing a story for his friends each Valentine's Day. This collection brings all of them to his readers for the first time. With fiction, nonfiction, and a story in verse, there's something for every reader here.
Moderating this event is Jennifer Donnelly, author of Stepsister which tells the story of Isabelle has tried to fit in. To live up to her mother’s expectations. To be like her stepsister. To be sweet. To be pretty. One by one, she has cut away pieces of herself in order to survive a world that doesn’t appreciate a girl like her. And that has made her mean, jealous, and hollow. Until she gets a chance to alter her destiny and prove what ugly stepsisters have always known: it takes more than heartache to break a girl.
