Under the persona of Ray Smith, Kerouac lived the life of a bum. He didn’t work, ate and slept when he wanted, went where he pleased and wrote about it as well. While this is an amusing glimpse into a time when many people voluntarily dropped out of working life, Ray’s musings come off as so much lazy meanderings about eating, sleeping and screwing. There is little of meaningful insight although some of the prose reaches for and almost achieves a kind of turgid lyricism. In parts where it seems as if he’s playing with language, cramming two words into one or using odd metaphors, there is a hint of beauty, of literary ambition that strains to be more than mere diary entries.
