Grant Takes Command

General William T. Sherman once remarked of his close comrade-in-arms, "To me he is a mystery, and I believe he is a mystery to himself." The present work yields up a detailed and revealing portrait of Grant during the last year and a half of the Civil War, and goes to considerable length in untangling the enigma. It also addresses the issue of how Lincoln decided upon Grant as the linchpin to winning closure of the war.
