Grim Street

The photographer first came to the attention of the photography world in 1973 with a solo exhibition at MoMA/NYC, an iconic show that proved Cohen a heir apparent to the explosive street photography of the sixties, with images as original & effective as the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, or Weegee. Looking here, at the images presented in this book, one feels the interpretive plausibility of witnessing the fusion of Ralph Eugene Meatyard & Diane Arbus: these photos from Cohen's hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania are deliberately disconcerting, almost vulgar.
