When he inadvertently causes the death of a beloved student, sensei Ho renounces his former life and begins wandering the streets, searching for salvation. Soon, a small group of followers surrounds him: Michael is addicted to gambling; Vietnam vet Ranger is slowly losing his grip on reality; Lamont is a street-gang warlord turned alcoholic; Target speaks only by echoing others; and Brewster collects paperbacks and stores them in an abandoned building. When Michael witnesses what he believes is an opportunity for blackmail, he and the others set out to uncover proof, desperate to find enough money to move Brewster's collection of books before the warehouse is destroyed.
