I’d love to go to one of your events! What do I need to do to attend?
In order to attend one of our events, all customers must either purchase the featured event book or a $15 Strand gift card, unless otherwise noted.
How can I purchase the book or gift card for the event??
There are three options for purchase:
- Online Customers may purchase the featured book or gift card by clicking on the corresponding blue hyperlink located next to the “Admit One” icon on the event details page. Please note that all online event purchases require payment at the time of checkout.
- In-Store Customers may purchase the featured book or gift card any time during business hours at our main floor registers. When checking out, please specify that you are making your purchase for the event you wish to attend. Please note that your receipt is required as proof of purchase for admittance to the event.
- At the Event A register is located at the entrance to the event on the Rare Books Floor. Customers may purchase the featured book or gift card at the door on the day of the event.
Do I receive a ticket for the event?
No, tickets are not distributed for events. If you placed your order online, your name will be added to our guest list once your order has been processed. If you purchased the book or gift card at our main floor registers prior to the event, you must present your receipt in order to attend.
How many guests may attend with the purchase of the featured book or gift card?
Each option only admits one guest.
How many copies of the featured event book will the author/artist sign?
The amount of copies signed for any one customer is at the discretion of the author/artist.
Can I take pictures and/or take a picture with the author/artist?
Again, this decision is at the discretion of the author/artist.
Can I purchase other books by the same author/artist? And will he/she sign them?
Any previously published books by the same author/artist that we have in stock will be made available for purchase at the event. Again, the amount of books an author/artist is willing to sign is solely at his/her discretion.
If I already own the featured book and/or have books previously published by the same author/artist, may I bring those to the event to be signed?
No. However, we provide additional copies of the featured book, as well as any previously published books we have in stock, at the event for purchase. Please note that if you do not want to purchase another copy of the featured book, you can always purchase a $15 Strand gift card for admittance to the event.
What if I purchased a book or gift card online on behalf of someone else?
The name of the person who placed the online order will be added to the guest list and any guest(s) attending the event will have to give the purchaser’s name at the door.
I placed my order online to be shipped and haven’t received my ticket/book/gift card yet. Where is it?
All event orders must be placed for store pick-up. You will receive your book or gift card once you’ve given your name at the door. If you placed your order to be shipped, please note that we will change your order to store pick-up and you will not be charged for shipping.
Does purchasing the featured book or gift card reserve me a seat at the event?
No, purchasing the featured book or gift card only guarantees admittance to the event. However, seating still remains first come, first serve. We recommend that guests arrive 30–60 minutes prior to the start of the event in order to get a seat.
Does the purchase of a featured book or gift card allow me admittance to any Strand event?
No. The purchase of a featured book or gift card is only valid for that event. If you wish to attend other events, you must purchase the feature book or a gift card in order to attend.
My online event order was cancelled! Oh no! Did the event sell out?
No, the event did not sell out. If your online order was cancelled, it was because you did not provide a payment method at the time of checkout. If you are still interested in attending the event, you may do so by placing a new online order or making your purchase in-store or at the event.
Why can’t I place an online event order on the day of the event?
Due to the processing time for all orders, we’re unable to process online event orders on the day of the event. However, you can still purchase the featured book or a gift card at our main floor registers or at the door to the event.
What happens if I'm unable to attend the event?
If you know that you are unable to attend an event prior to the event date, please contact our Customer Service Department and we will be happy to provide a full refund, or set aside a gift card or signed copy of the featured event book for you (depending on availability and which option you chose). Please note that shipping charges do apply if you would like to have the book shipped.
Please be aware that if you are unable to attend an event and selected the event + book option, we will attempt to place a signed copy on hold for you at our basement information desk depending on the availability of remaining event book stock. This hold will only last seven days after an event. If a week passes and you have not come in to pick up your book, or contacted us to make shipping arrangements, your hold will expire and your book(s) will no longer be held.
If signed copies are no longer available, we may be able to offer you an unsigned copy as an alternative. If neither option is available and/or you do not want an unsigned copy, then we can offer you a gift card (or store credit) for the equivalent amount of your order. Again, please note that full refunds are only available if you notify us prior to the start of an event.
