Continuing the series of McSweeney's Rectangulars and bringing readers exciting young first fiction writers, "Icelander" is a madcap genre blender, an Agatha Christie mystery by way of Nabokov. When the legendary crime-stopper and evil-thwarter Emily Bean dies, everyone expects her daughter Shirley MacGuffin to follow in her footsteps. But our heroine has no such ambitions, being completely uninterested in chasing steam tunnels or fleeing the inhuman Refurserkir. ButEvil has no interest in her lack of interest, and thus: adventure ensues in this giddy romp steeped in Nordic lore and pulpy intrigue.
