A Guide to Thermal Physics: From the Fundamentals Thru CallenLevel Equilibrium Thermodynamics
Our Price: $20.99 Format: Paperback
 ISBN13: 9781453772805
 Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
 Published: August 2010
AUDIENCE: This thermodynamics textbook is suitable for all students of thermal physics, from the third semester of introductory calculusbased physics thru more advanced coursework in thermodynamics. It provides much greater depth than the coverage of thermal physics in traditional calculusbased physics textbooks, and in this way may be useful to students who are just learning thermal physics. It also provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals and covers both introductory thermal physics (thermal expansion, heat conduction, thermal radiation, ideal gases, and heat engines) and the mathematical formulation of thermodynamics (fundamental relation, Euler and GibbsDuhem, thermodynamic potentials, thermodynamic systems, Maxwell relations, and phase transitions) in a more unified way; and in this way may be very helpful to students who are studying undergraduate or graduate level thermodynamics. This textbook also serves as a useful review of thermal physics and thermodynamics for students who have already studied thermodynamics. CONTENT: The beginning chapters are largely geared toward providing a solid foundation of the fundamental concepts and their relationship with the mathematics. The material from these chapters is intended to serve as a valuable introduction for beginning students and selflearners, and also as a useful review for advanced students. The later chapters grow increasingly indepth: For example, the treatise of heat conduction discusses the integral in a variety of forms and even compares it to more familiar electrical concepts; the chapter on heat engines derives the Carnot efficiency in general using the entropy change integral, and covers a variety of cycles, including the endoreversible engine; and thermodynamics includes not only the usual thermodynamic square, but also the more general octahedron and cross polytope. PREREQUISITES: No previous exposure to thermal physics is assumed. The student should be familiar with the techniques of calculus; a brief review of some relevant techniques, such as partial differentiation, is included. IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS: Boxes of important distinctions are included in order to help students distinguish between similar concepts – like heat, temperature, and internal energy. TABLE OF EQUATIONS: There is a handy table of equations organized by topic on the back cover of the textbook. This also includes the thermodynamic square. CONCISE OUTLINE FORMAT: The text is conveniently organized by specific topic to help students who may not be reading straight through, but who may be searching for a specific idea or who may be reviewing material that they read previously. There is also a handy index to help locate concepts quickly. Examples and important notes clearly stand out from discussions of concepts. MATHEMATICAL & CONCEPTUAL EMPHASIS: There is much emphasis both on learning the mathematics precisely and understanding the concepts at a deep, precise level. An underlying idea is that students should not guess at concepts, but that concepts are mathematically motivated: Let the equations be your guide. NOTES: Several notes are boxed to describe important points, common mistakes, and exceptions. Hundreds of footnotes are included to discuss subtleties without interrupting the flow of the text. EXAMPLES: Each chapter includes fullysolved examples to illustrate the main problemsolving strategies. PRACTICE: The end of each chapter has a good selection of instructive conceptual questions and practice problems. HINTS & ANSWERS: 100% of the conceptual questions have both hints and answers, since it’s crucial to develop a solid understanding of the concepts in order to succeed in physics. Some of the practice problems have answers to help independent students gain confidence by reproducing the same answers, while 100% of the practice problems have hints so that students can see if they are solving the problems correctly.

Chemical Word Scrambles Anyone Can Do (Hard)

Chemical word scrambles are an exciting new form of word puzzles. You don’t need to know any chemistry! These chemical word scrambles will appeal to all word puzzle lovers, whether or not they also enjoy science. Each word is composed of symbols from the periodic table, instead of letters; but you don’t need to be familiar with the periodic table to solve the word scrambles. Here is an example: The words BRaIn PoWEr are composed of the following symbols for chemical elements: B for boron, Ra for radium, In for indium, Po for polonium, W for tungsten, and Er for erbium. In chemical word scrambles, the words have been scrambled by rearranging the symbols – not the letters. Symbols that have two letters – like He for helium and Nd for neodymium – can’t be split or have their letters reordered. This creates a significant distinction between ordinary word scrambles and chemical word scrambles. For example, the symbols Er, V, S, and Es may be combined to form the word SErVEs, but not the word SEVErs because symbols would have to be split to form SEVErs. One neat difference between ordinary word scrambles and chemical word scrambles is that chemical word scrambles allow us to make use of a vocabulary of longer words without effectively increasing the difficulty of the puzzle. For example, the word VErBAl is a 6letter word, but only a 4symbol word. When trying to rearrange the symbols Al, Er, B, and V to form the word VErBAl, there are fewer permutations to consider compared to rearranging the 6 letters A, l, e, r, b, and v to form the word verbal. We saw this as an excellent opportunity to make word scramble puzzles that involve a vocabulary of longer words. The level of difficulty of this Chemical Word Scrambles puzzle book is HARD. This book involves words that mostly have 6 to 7 symbols, and therefore 6 to 14 letters; all of the challenge words of this HARD book have 8 symbols. (There is also an EASY book with 4 to 5 symbol words, and a MEDIUM book with 6 symbols. Puzzlers who can solve harder word scrambles may want to begin with the EASY volume to get the hang of unscrambling words in terms of chemical symbols before moving onto MEDIUM or HARD.) Each puzzle features a challenge word made by rearranging the first symbol of each word. A unique feature of this book is that there is a Hints section at the back separate from the Answers section, for puzzlers who may be stuck and want to check just the first letter of the solution.

This is book is a collection of creative physics problems. No examples or solutions are provided, as this volume of physics problems is intended to be used in conjunction with a textbook. Like textbook problems, answers to selected questions are provided. This can be useful for (i) teachers who are looking for engaging problems to assign or use as examples and (ii) diligent selflearners who are willing to work for the answer and possibly rework the problem a few times (which can be a rewarding strategy in the long run, but does not suit many of today’s students who want the information simply injected into their brains). These imaginative problems are designed to: engage the interest of students in this difficult subject, add a little zest to abstract concepts like angular momentum, and challenge students to apply the concepts to involved problems. This includes many instructive problems that force students to think through key concepts (like collisions where students calculate the lost mechanical energy), problems with conceptual questions (e.g. why a ball actually rolls farther up an incline in the presence of friction than it does sliding without friction), and review problems grouped by a theme (such as one about a chimp who stole physics à la the Grinch). Involved problems are included to build fluency in the major problemsolving strategies, like combining conservation of energy and momentum. Many problems are broken down into parts to help guide students along – that is, you can check your answer to part (a) before moving onto part (b).

AUTHOR: Chris McMullen earned his Ph.D. in physics from Oklahoma State University and currently teaches physics at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He developed the Improve Your Math Fluency series of workbooks to help students become more fluent in basic math skills.WHAT TO EXPECT: This is a workbook designed to offer plenty of practice with essential skills. It is not a textbook designed to teach trigonometry, but a workbook designed to supplement a student’s instruction in trigonometry. Examples and a brief description of the concepts are included to serve as a quick refresher and a guide. If you need more instruction, you should use this workbook in combination with a textbook. The last chapter involves applications of trig identities, which is a challenging topic that will mostly interest more advanced students. A few chapters are intended to help students memorize the trig functions of common angles like 30, 150, or 315 degrees, which will be especially useful for students who may take exams without a calculator (that’s the case with the MCAT and many math and science courses). There may be more practice than many students need, which is much better than having too little practice. Any extra pages may be helpful for teachers or parents with multiple children.DESCRIPTION: This Trigonometry Essentials Practice Workbook with Answers provides ample practice for developing fluency in very fundamental trigonometry skills. Every problem can be answered without a calculator, which is very helpful for students who aren’t allowed to use a calculator. This is the case in some trig and physics courses, as well as some standardized exams (like the MCAT).CONTENTS: This workbook is conveniently divided up into 11 chapters so that students can focus on one trigonometry skill at a time. Skills include the following:converting between degrees and radians;expressing sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent as fractions by looking at right triangles;solving for unknown sides and angles in 45°45°90° and 30°60°90° right triangles;determining the sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, and cotangent of multiples of 30° and 45° up to 360° (working with both degrees and radians);practice finding the reference angle for angles in Quadrants II, III, and IV;finding the inverse trig functions;applying the law of sines and the law of cosines to solve for unknown sides and angles in acute and obtuse triangles;solving problems with trig identities (like the angle sum and difference formulas);and solving algebraic equations that feature basic trig functions.EXAMPLES: Each section begins with a few pages of instructions for how to solve the problems followed by some examples. These examples should serve as a useful guide until students are able to solve the problems independently.ANSWERS: Answers to exercises are tabulated at the back of the book. This helps students develop confidence and ensures that students practice correct techniques, rather than practice making mistakes.PHOTOCOPIES: The copyright notice permits parents/teachers who purchase one copy or borrow one copy from a library to make photocopies for their own children/students only.
