In 1968, photographer Josef Koudelka was thirty years old, and had spent six years photographing gypsies and theatre. He had never covered a news event. All that was to change, dramatically. On the night of August 21, Prague was invaded by Warsaw Pact tanks. Koudelka smuggled his photographs out of the country - they reached New York and a year later the reportasge was distributed by Magnum Photos. To avoid reprisals, the images were credited to an unknown Czech photographer. Not until sixteen years later did Koudelka acknowledge authorship. Here are 250 of these searing photographs - selected by Koudelka himself.

One on the Prague Psring, while the other was an emotionally charged study of gypsy communities. This book shows that in the lands of exile through which the photographer travels with his potent urge to see, Koudelka's own particular talent stands affirmed and expanded. Aperture’s new edition of KOUDELKA: GYPSIES rekindles the energy and astonishment of this foundational body of work by master photographer Josef Koudelka. Lavishly printed in a unique quardratone mix, it offers an expanded look at gypsies – 109 photographs of Roma society taken between 1962 and 1971 in then-Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. The design and edit for this volume revisits the artist’s original intention for the work and is based on a maquette originally prepared in 1968 by Koudelka, who intended to publish the work in Prague but was forced to flee, landing eventually in Paris in 1975. The present edition includes a selection of 60 photographs taken in various Roma settlements around East Slovakia, plus 30 never-before-published images and a new text by Roma scholar and sociologist Will Guy, who also wrote the essay for the 1975 edition. Illus., 8 gatefolds / 109 quadratone. 224p.
