This presentation of color photographs by American photographer William Eggleston is a work of spectacular visual acuity. The result of filmmaker Michael Almereyda's year-long search through the William Eggleston archives is this culled trove of heretofore unseen images spanning four decades of work. Unusual in its concentration on family and friends, the book highlights an air of offhand intimacy, typically Eggleston and typically surprising. With an Afterword and additional texts. Illus., 87 four-color plates. 144p.

This is the first book on Ghirri (1943-1992) in the United States. Uncannily prescient and unfortunately deceased so young, Ghirri shared the sensibility of what became known in the U.S. as the New Color and the New Topographics movements before they had even been named. He believed that the local and the universal were inseparable and that life's polarities - love and hate, present and past - were equally compelling. This dynamic book, in addition to the singularly provocative photographs it contains, also includes a selection of Ghirri's essays published in English for the first time. W/Chronology. 95 in color/30 b&w. Lacking dust jacket.

In April 1979, a book of fifteen colour photographs by William Eggleston was published in a limited edition of twenty. The photographs were taken from the second chapter of an unpublished larger work entitled Wedgewood Blue. Amidst his publications Chromes (2011), Los Alamos Revisited (2012), and the upcoming Democratic Forest (2014) and Election Eve (2016), all documenting his lifetime work, At Zenith constitutes a calm and experimental intermezzo from Eggleston's familiar loudness and intensity of colours. The photographer pointed his camera at the sky to focus on the clouds rolling by.

William Eggleston's latest monograph features photographs taken during the early 1970s using a large format 5x7 camera. While the book includes imagery typical of the Eggleston oeuvre - streetscapes, parked automobiles, portraits of the strange & disenfranchised - it also offers never-before-published images taken in the nightclubs the photographer used to frequent. Able to disguise his camera, Eggleston could shoot in virtual darkness in the juke joints and clubs around Memphis. The portraits are offhand & spontaneous but insistently stark; their brutality heightened by the absence of color, conveying a leveling effect: all subjects are clearly denizens of the same realm. Illus., 57 4-color photos.

A few years ago in the archives of William Eggleston Artistic Trust in Memphis, a box was found containing Eggleston's earliest photography - remarkably in black and white. The photos were subsequently exhibited at Cheim & Read gallery in New York and sold. This book reunites these photos in their entirety, and shows the artistic beginnings of a pioneer of contemporary photography. In the late 1950s, Eggleston began photographing suburban Memphis using high-speed 35 mm black and white film, developing the style and motifs that would come to shape his pivotal color work including diners, supermarkets, domestic interiors and people engaged in seemingly trivial and banal situations. Now, fifty years later, all the plates in BEFORE COLOR have been scanned from vintage prints developed by Eggleston in his own darkroom. Illus., 152 Quadratone photographs; tipped-in photo on cover. 200p.
