Dubbed "Madam X," a perfectly preserved mummy has lain forgotten in the basement of Boston's Crispin Museum for years, but its sudden rediscovery is great news for the financially struggling institution. But medical examiner Maura Isles soon finds a macabre message hidden in the corpse that proves that this is actually a recent murder victim. Teaming up with homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, the women investigate, only to find another body in the recesses of the museum. Archaeologist Josephine Pulcillo knows she is meant to be involved in the case - her darkest secret is hinted at by the killer - and when Josephine disappears, it is up to Maura and Jane to uncover the truth before its too late.
