When Bertram Reiner appears at the Shadowbrook asylum two years after the conclusion of World War II, chief psychiatrist Dr. Harrison considers this charismatic patient to be the classic case of war neurosis, but then the trouble starts, and Dr. Harrison is forced to reconsider his initial assessment. A string of unlikely events begins to disturb the order of the asylum and Dr. Harrison can't seem to get a handle on Bertram. Meanwhile, Harrison's own long-burried troubles are reemerging with brutal force. Harrison sensed that something more than location and occupation connected him to Matilda, the head nurse, and now he begins to suspect that Reiner is also involved.
