About Fred Bass
A fellow lover of books, Fred was learning the family business by the tender age of 13, quickly taking to the book trade where he worked side-by-side with his father. After a tour of duty in the Armed Forces, Fred returned to the family business and took over its management in 1956.
For over 30 years, he co-owned and managed the store with his daughter Nancy Bass Wyden. He was part of the Strand his entire life since his father, Benjamin Bass, founded the store in 1927.
Fred spent 77 years doing what he loved most– working at the buying desk, finding the miles and miles of used books that Strand is built on.
"He never had an office and loved when customers told him they enjoyed “getting lost in the stacks”. He spent all of his time behind his buying desk, eager to see what treasures would come across it. He felt working with books was the best job in the world." ~ Nancy Bass Wyden, Fred's daughter and owner of Strand Book Store
