STAFF PICK: "Megg, Mogg, & Owl (of which this is the first collection) is either not for you or extremely for you. There’s not much of a middle ground with this zine/webcomic sensation, but it is one of the funniest, grimmest comics you’re likely to stumble across. The “plot” is that Megg (a witch), her boyfriend Mogg (a cat), and their straight-man roommate Owl (an owl) live together, blundering through their days in a pointless stoned malaise as they fail at love, work, social interaction, and happiness. These strips don’t have a set length, any kind of a comedic formula, or an easily discernible narrative arc. The characters have very few redeeming qualities, and their misadventures have no morals. Seriously, this stuff makes It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia look like The Brady Bunch. Simon Hanselmann’s pencil-and-watercolor drawings are perfect for conjuring the weird, numb pastel universe in which his aimless sad-sack creations stumble their way through life, and his lo-fi style is a perfect conduit for the bleak deadpan hijinks.
