The juxtaposition of poetry and chess problems in this book may at first seem incongruous, until one takes into account its author. Nabokov approaches language as a great puzzle, in which each phrase is a solution distinguishable by its unimprovable grace. Like the chess problem, the poem (and the translation) sets out to perform a certain task in a few deft moves. It is the choice of those movements wherein lies the art.
