Since the fairly recent re-discovery of Behn, scholars have closely examined her as a feminist archetype, rebel and radical author. Few, however, have placed her so well in her own true contexts as Lewcock (history of theater and drama emeriti, Cambridge U. Institute of Continuing Education) does here. She considers Behn's plays as theatrical artifacts and examines their presentation in light of the most recent knowledge of seventeenth-century productions on the scenic stage. Lewcock finds innovative ways to analyze the dramas, including employing the witness of Pepys, Jeffrey Boys and the King, as well as that of Behn herself. She closely describes the marketing of Behn's plays according to the sensibilities of the time, the role of satirical criticism in the theater world, the workings of sex without sex, movement patterns and costume, and the role of the audience member as confidant, voyeur, participant, and spectator. In this collection by thirty-five students at Downtown High School in San Francisco, the young writers explore the themes of resistance and resilience through their original monologues and plays. After a semester of working intensely with actors at American Conservatory Theater and writing tutors from 826 Valencia, the students produced this powerful look into the realities of high school life, the pressures surrounding young people, and the strength it takes to keep going. Perfect for reading or performing, these pieces are a refreshing tool for using theater in the classroom or outside of it.The thirty-five students who wrote these monologues and plays attend Downtown High School, a continuation school where students who have had trouble succeeding in their previous schools have the opportunity to complete their high school requirements and earn a diploma. From the introduction: "We all chose to attend this school instead of dropping out or giving up, and that is just one of the ways in which we are resilient. In our acting class, like in life, sometimes we just had to get up and get over it; we had to arrive, breathe, and be still. We couldn’t just sit there and do nothing, so we stood up and told our stories."

Jewish playwrights and plays of Jewish interest intended for general audiences have been increasingly conspicuous on the American stage since the early 20Ýsuperscript th¨ century, No wonder. The evolution of Jewish life in America teems with richly dramatic material: immigration, "making it," intergenerational family relationships, the impact of the Great Depression, two world wars, the Holocaust and the establishment of Israel, and the emergence of feminism and alternative life styles. And pre-eminently and enduringly, the dilemma of identity: how to acculturate without losing one's Jewish identity.
