  • A very model of a modern major play

While I had seen the film version and a stage version of this play, it wasn't until I read it on the page that I realized what a singular achievement this play truly is. Mr. Guare is able to tell his story in such spare strokes – flicks of his wrist that create a rich and bottomless territory for both the reader and actors to occupy. A full world and LARGE story exists between these closely-matched covers. It is as much a testament to restraint as it is a confirmation of the life of stage plays on the page. This is a major work that firmly belongs alongside Angels in America, How I Learned to Drive, and Sunday in the Park with George as a masterwork of the last two decades of the 20th century.
