Kyle, Jason and Nelson return in this tension-fraught sequel to “Rainbow Boys”. I adore Mr. Sanchez’s realistic writings about the travails of homosexuals in today’s society. While matters are getting better (the on-site school group petitioning for gay privileges helps a great deal), family strife continues to exist and homophobic students still make life a trial. The boys have hard decisions to make and each one gets equal attention from the author. We are drawn into their plights and joys as they struggle with issues about coming out, being with HIV-positive partners or which college to attend. If you’ve ever had problems like these, you’ll find yourself nodding or whispering aloud as you read how these boys tackle their various problems. None of them are perfect and they occasionally fail to help themselves. They take the coward’s way out, give accepted answers to appease others or throw tantrums when they don’t get their own way. They’re flawed characters and this makes reading them a constant source of excitement. I have only high praise for Mr. Sanchez’s efforts here. I hope to get my hands on “Rainbow Road” and soon.
