The New Yorker's master of 'graveyard humor' offers up this collection of long out-of-print material from 1943-1965, plus some previously unpublished stories added to 'McSorley's Wonderful Saloon.' An enormous collection, with an illuminating author's note that places perspective on one man's lifelong love affair with New York. Includes a new introduction by David Remnick. 736p.
In this omnibus collecting decades of his work, Mitchell offers compassionate, wistful examinations of early-20th-century New Yorkers who existed on the margins of society. (June) Copyright 1993 Cahners Business Information.

The SECOND best book I've ever readSee my review for Joseph Mitchell's other book, "My Ears Are Bent." This is nearly as good, not quite as funny, but still has every quality of the other book. With 2 grad degrees (Am. Lit/Psych Nursing), I think I'm qualified to say he was the best American writer ever. Not that I don't love Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Melville--but Mitchell was a reporter who wrote so well, concisely, and with humor, that he leaves them in the dust.
