Renaissance

In the painting of the Renaissance, Western art reached its absolute zenith: for the first time art became intellectual, inspired by critical breakthroughs in the natural sciences and the great voyages of discovery, together with the religious tensions of the era and its political and social unrest - all were reflected in painting, a realm in which the real and the ideal, the secular and the sacred, ecstatic mysticism and cool skepticism flourished side by side.
