Winner of the Nelson Hurst & Marsh Biography Award. A fine study of the British Edwardian era explorer, whose sensational `Endurance' expedition to Antarctica still captures the imagination. Feted as a national hero, hisachievements remain the "very stuff of legend," even though the world to which he returned in 1917 did not seem to welcome back surviving heroes. Poverty-stricken by the end of WWI, he had to pay off his debts through writing andendless lecturing. He died of a heart attack at the age of 47 in the midst of one last expedition.
