The Phantom Skipjack is an illustrated historical mystery set on fictional Carroway Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Framed as a story told by the island's colorful storyteller, Crazy Jack Mercer, the tale begins inside Haddie's Fish Shak, where a stranger notices an old photograph showing men standing on the frozen Chesapeake during the legendary Great Freeze of 1857.

Jack recounts the story of a mysterious skipjack reportedly seen traveling across the ice during that extraordinary winter. What begins as local folklore gradually takes on a more unsettling character when islanders discover strange tracks crossing the frozen bay, evidence of heavy runners beneath a vessel, and reports of a dark sail moving where no ordinary boat could travel.

Driven by curiosity, a young waterman named Benjamin Pike follows the trail across the frozen Chesapeake and discovers a weathered skipjack resting upon the ice. Aboard the vessel he finds a journal dating to January 1857, suggesting that the ship may have been part of an experimental attempt to cross the frozen bay. Yet before Benjamin can fully understand what he has found, the vessel vanishes into a rolling fog, leaving behind only questions.

Blending documented history with Chesapeake folklore, The Phantom Skipjack explores the Great Freeze of 1857, a real event that temporarily transformed portions of the bay into a frozen wilderness.
