Beware of the FeyWith astonishingly beautiful writing, Ms. Lo has re-invented the Cinderella tale, one filled with fairies both cruel and fascinating, creatures who don’t give wishes to mankind so much as demand payment for their gifts. Into this glorious world, rife with perilous enchantment, falls Aisling, a stepdaughter who imagines her only refuge from her cruel stepfamily is to retreat into this half-world. But is that what she really wants? Ms. Lo’s story is both effervescent as a bubble and vicious as a sword thrust. Like Aisling (Ash for short), the reader can take nothing for granted, neither pity nor cruelty. The story forces us to reevaluate the difference between love and infatuation, what we owe to the people around us and what is the true nature of enchantment. This is a novel of superb imagery, delicate phrasing and storytelling, reminding us what these old tales were once for: enchantment and cautionary warnings.
